TURP Surgery for Enlarged Prostate

TURP has been the benchmark for prostate surgery for decades, and it remains an excellent operation for the right-sized gland.

What the operation involves

A resectoscope is passed through the urethra — there is no external cut. The obstructing inner part of the prostate is removed in small chips using an electrical loop, opening the channel through which urine flows. The chips are sent for histopathology, which occasionally picks up an incidental cancer that nothing else had shown.

Who TURP suits best

Prostates up to roughly 80 grams. Much larger glands take longer to resect, which increases absorption of irrigation fluid and bleeding, so HoLEP is the better option there. Men on blood thinners who cannot safely stop them are also better served by a laser technique.

Recovery and results

Flow improves immediately once the catheter is removed. Burning and urgency for two to three weeks while the raw surface heals are normal and settle gradually. Avoid straining, heavy lifting and long rides for about a month.

Long-term results are durable — most men never need a second prostate procedure. Retrograde ejaculation occurs in the majority, and needs to be understood before consent rather than after.

TURP Surgery — common questions

How long is the hospital stay for TURP?

Usually two to three days including the catheter period. Some fit patients with small resections go home on the second day.

Is TURP painful afterwards?

There is no wound, so pain is limited to burning while passing urine and bladder spasms for a couple of weeks. Both are managed with simple medication.

What is TURP cost in Faridabad?

It depends on the hospital, room category, anaesthesia and whether laser is used. A written estimate is given after your assessment, and TURP is covered by health insurance and by CGHS/ECHS panels at empanelled hospitals.

Can the prostate grow back after TURP?

The gland can enlarge again over ten to fifteen years in a small proportion of men, but repeat surgery is uncommon.
