What counts as premature ejaculation
Broadly, ejaculation happening sooner than desired — usually within about a minute of penetration — with little control over timing and distress as a result. Lifelong PE has been present since the first sexual experiences; acquired PE develops later and often has an identifiable cause such as erectile dysfunction, prostatitis, thyroid disorder or anxiety.
Treatment that has evidence behind it
Several approaches work, and they work better combined than alone.
- Behavioural techniques — stop-start and squeeze methods, practised over weeks
- Topical anaesthetic spray or cream used correctly before intercourse
- Prescribed oral medication, including on-demand and daily options
- Treating erectile dysfunction where both coexist — often the missing piece
- Treating prostatitis or thyroid abnormality where found
- Addressing performance anxiety, with counselling where appropriate
Unregulated capsules, oils and "timing" products sold online have no evidence behind them and some contain undeclared drugs that interact dangerously with heart medication.
What treatment realistically achieves
Most men achieve a significant and satisfying improvement in control within a few weeks. Treatment is usually a course rather than something lifelong, and the aim agreed at the start is a realistic one for you and your partner — not a number from an advertisement.
Premature Ejaculation Treatment — common questions
Is premature ejaculation a psychological problem?
Both biological and psychological factors contribute. Treating only one side is why many men find partial results.
Do sprays and creams work?
Topical anaesthetics do help when used correctly and at the right time. Applied wrongly, they reduce sensation for the partner too.
Will I need medication forever?
Usually not. Many men use medication for a period while learning behavioural techniques, then reduce or stop it.
Can PE and ED occur together?
Frequently. Rushing to ejaculate before losing an erection is a common pattern, and treating the erectile problem often resolves the timing one.
