Medical reasons for circumcision
Beyond religious and cultural practice, there are clear clinical indications.
- Phimosis — a foreskin that will not retract
- Paraphimosis — a retracted foreskin that will not return, which is an emergency
- Recurrent balanitis or infection under the foreskin
- Pain or tearing during intercourse
- Lichen sclerosus (BXO)
- Recurrent urine infections in selected patients
Comparing the techniques
All three achieve the same result; they differ in operating time, bleeding and dressing care.
- ZSR stapler: fastest, minimal bleeding, neat circular line, no stitches to remove — the device ring separates on its own in about two weeks
- Laser: precise with good haemostasis, fine sutures, low swelling
- Conventional: reliable and lower cost; suits complex or scarred foreskins where a device will not fit
Recovery
Day-care procedure under local or general anaesthesia depending on age. Desk work in two to three days, no cycling or gym for two weeks, and no sexual activity for four weeks. Mild swelling in the first week is normal. The clinic gives written care instructions and a follow-up date rather than leaving you to guess.
Circumcision (ZSR / Laser) — common questions
Which is better — ZSR or laser circumcision?
ZSR is quicker with fewer dressing changes; laser gives a very precise cut with low swelling. Both are good. The foreskin's condition often decides which is technically suitable.
Is circumcision painful?
Not during the procedure, which is done under anaesthesia. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is managed with simple painkillers.
How long does healing take?
Two to three weeks for comfortable healing; four weeks before resuming sexual activity.
Is adult circumcision safe?
Yes, and it is a common day-care procedure. Diabetic patients particularly benefit when recurrent infection is the problem, with sugar control optimised beforehand.
